Why it matters
Why this page matters in the wider system.
The DPP creates the first regulatory precedent for garments carrying persistent, machine-readable data records, and it establishes the layer that fit and garment-outcome data can attach to. The sustainability purpose is the one the regulation states; the side effect is the one that matters here. A brand already obliged to publish structured construction data can publish finished-garment dimensions in the same record at close to no marginal cost — and finished-garment dimensions are the missing half of every cross-brand fit prediction. Compliance funds the infrastructure that a voluntary market failed for a century to coordinate.
Encodes material composition, supply chain data, repairability and care instructions against a persistent product identifier.
Is reached through a carrier attached to the physical garment — a QR code resolving via GS1 Digital Link, or an NFC tag in higher-value categories.
Must use interoperable, machine-readable formats compatible with EU registry systems, which is what stops each brand inventing its own schema.
Is distinct from personal data: it describes the garment and encodes no wearer identity or measurements.
Reaches textiles through delegated acts expected from 2027, with the record retained for at least ten years after the last unit of a model is placed on the market.
